Doris Green is the granddaughter of William Thomas Fulford, son of David W. Fulford of Straits, Carteret County, North Carolina. William and two of his brothers, Nathan and David Sanders, and several other Carteret County families migrated to Florida around 1880. Evenutally they found their way to the area now known as Cortez in Manatee County on the Gulf coast below Tampa. Here they settled and developed a thriving fishing industry. Many of their descendants still live in the area. Doris' book recounts the history of these early settlers and their descendants with a folksy, reminiscent style. She provides many anecdotes about individuals from her memory of these people and the times. There are some inaccuracies in detail. However, keeping that in mind, the book is a lively and entertaining account of these people. It provides rare insights into their every day life. There are many photographs of the area in and around Cortez and of the folks mentioned in the book. The book must be purchased from Doris. I have misplaced the address. As soon as I find it, I will post it here. |

The sub-title of this book, "Genealogy of the Fulford Family in America", is somewhat misleading as the book is really about the Fulfords who settled in Georgia. That aside, the book is excellently done. Annette is the daughter of Maggie Fulford, daughter of Josiah Fulford, son of Guyton Fulford, son of Jordan Fulford of Pitt County, North Carolina. Sometime between 1814 and 1829, Jordan Fulford and others from Pitt County moved to Laurens County, Georgia. The book gives a brief overview of the Fulfords in Pitt County and then picks up with the family of Jordan and his descendants. Ms. Stewart has done her research very thoroughly, at least from John Fulford, Jr. forward. The book is rich with family photographs, letters, and copies of records. We can learn much of the lives and times of these Fulfords from Ms. Stewart's book. Anyone with ties to the Georgia Fulfords will certainly want a copy of this book, which can be purchased by writing to:
