The 8th Annual Reunion of the Carteret County Pigotts was held August 5th at the home of Brenda Pigott in Gloucester, NC. As usual, the food was plentiful and delicious. Everyone made a pig (no pun intended!) of themselves. Don't know about the rest of the crowd, but our gang didn't eat anymore that day and very little the next! And, Oh My, the desserts. You could have made another meal (and some did!) off of just the desserts. Of course, you just had to sample each and every one -- didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, you know!
It rained hard all day the day before and the "locals" said it had been raining for three weeks. But the day of the reunion cleared off beautifully and the temp was just right. Even the mosquitoes cooperated -- more or less. Although there were a few die-hards that survived the early morning spraying.
Eloise was kind enough to leave us the key to Charles' house and in the afternoon a large group of us packed into several cars and went over to see the treasures he had salvaged from Uncle Joe's attic. Among the things we saw were the mariner's licenses of Uncle Joe, Uncle Dan, Uncle Lige, and Charles, and an old ship's compass. Needless to say, Charles was missed by all.
Brenda gassed up her outboard and took some of us for a ride past Lester and Twyla's old place (site of Rafe's homestead) on the waterfront and into the mouth of Sleepy Creek.
A number of people brought mementos of the past. Harry Chadwick brought a large picture of Uncle Lige in his Navy uniform. Walton Willis brought a copy of William Elijah's new Pigott book and a copy of some of William Elijah's notes that did not make it into the book. Lola Pigott brought two books with all the Pigott information she has been able to puyt together so far. Someone b rought a couple of pictures that no one was able to identify. Tommy Pigott brought the walking cane his father was givedn as a token of appreciation by the people he helped rescue from drowning in Charleston Harbor back in 1885. Edith (Baer) Cole brought a picture of Calvin Pigott when he was a toddler and a picture of her grandfather George Baer and his first wife, Edith
We welcomed some new attendees and missed some who had attended in the past but were unable to be with us this year.
