Charlotte Ann (Aunt Shan) Pigott was the first of nine children born to Ralph Pigott and Emeline Stewart.
Being the eldest child and a female to boot, Aunt Shan was probably required to help with the rearing of the younger children as they came along.
In the early part of the 1900s, Aunt Shan had a millinery shop on the "main" road through the community now known as Gloucester. She made and sold hats and did other sewing. The shop was located between Uncle Jimmy Chadwick's place and what came to be the home of Lillian Pigott (Uncle John's widow). Source: Aunt Shan's nephew John Elwood Pigott, who lived in Gloucester between 1910 and 1915 and remembers her and her shop.
On 8 December 1904, at the age of 46, Aunt Shan became the first postmistress of the newly established Gloucester, NC, post office. She held the post until April 1914. Source: Post Office Microfilm #M-841 Roll #92, Carteret County, NC. The "post office" was a corner of the millinery shop.
In 1905, Grandma Emeline deeded property between Uncle Jimmy Chadwick's and John Nelson's to daughters Charlotte A. and Maggie A. Source: Original deed written by Emeline, witnessed by John A. Whitehurst, J.P., and recorded with the Register of Deeds for Carteret County. This appears to be the property upon which the millinery shop/post office was located.

She is not listed in the Charleston City Directory for 1922 and 1923. It is not known whether this was an oversight by the lister (Aunt Maggie is still in the Charleston area) or whether she had returned to Gloucester.
In 1924, Aunt Shan reappears in the Charleston City Directory.
