EMELINE STEWART PIGOTT

This is the story of Grandma Emeline (Stewart) Pigott, wife of J. Ralph "Rafe" Pigott. Emeline was born March 25, 1841 in Straits, Carteret County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Alexander and Rachael Stewart of Straits. She was the oldest of seven children born to Alexander and Rachael.

Not a whole lot is known about Emeline at this point. So any of you grandchildren (yes, there are still several living) or great-grandchildren who have any information about or pictures of Grandma, please forward them to me so they can be shared by all.

Emeline was born 25 Mar 1841 in Straits, Carteret County, NC. She was the first of seven children born to Alexander Stewart and Rachael Stewart.

Grandma married Grandpa on 26 Oct 1857. They made their home in what was to become Gloucester. The home was down on the waterfront. For those old enough to remember, Twyla and Lester lived there during the 1940s and '50s and on up into the '60s.

It would seem that Grandma had a pretty rough life whenever Grandpa was at home. But she stuck by him through thick and thin. It would also appear that she handled a good deal of the finances of the family - either because Grandpa was away at sea a lot or he wasn't to be trusted to not gamble away everything they owned!

One grandson, John Elwood Pigott, remembers her as a sweet, gentle person.

Emeline died July 28, 1914, and is buried in the Pigott Family Cemetery in Gloucester, NC.
